Dogwood
Building A Better Me
Tooth & Nail Records
2001
Some things come to mind while listening to this Dogwood album. They are as
follows: this sounds
like Bad Religion (kinda), this sounds like ALL (kinda), this sounds like
Jesus Rock (it is)--I bet these guys really are crowd-pleasers at the church-sponsored
"Rock Night"...this won't sell in the "secular" market
(it won't). The songs aren't bad at all, but with so many bands playing the
same stuff it will make Dogwood's odds of being noticed very slim. These guys
probably just want to do their thing and play their brand of Jesus Rock and
save lost souls along the way. Kind of like "kicking ass for god".
If you like ALL, Bad Religion, or band from Australia named Bodyjar, you will like this album. OK, you might not like it, but someone will--especially if your parents won't let you listen to NOFX because they use potty language. If your mom and dad get heavy on you just say, "Hey, it's on Tooth & Nail, Jesus loves it!" They will certainly understand. You know, MXPX is on Tooth & Nail. They are a great band playing the same thing as 10,000 other punk bands, except for the god references. Even MXPX has toned it down with the preachy lyrics, so there is always hope for Dogwood.
My favorite track is "The Good Times" because it's really a decent song and it sounds very much like ALL and I love ALL. So, if you are into praising Jesus and saving the non-believers at your school, you should get this CD.
