Alkaline
Trio
From Here To Infirmary
Vagrant Records
2001
Chicago's Alkaline Trio is getting so much publicity I wasn't sure whether
to do this review or
not.
When you see a Vagrant band's ad on MTV you must pause and assess the situation.
I thought that Alkaline Trio deserved the big summer push. From Here To
Infirmary delivers the goods, with catchy hooks and sing-along lyrics.
It's a summertime treat indeed. Felix Thursday thinks they sound a lot like
another Chicago band, the Smoking Popes. I agree, but not to the point that
I dismiss Alkaline Trio as not being original. Felix now claims that the drummer
used to be in the Smoking Popes and I believe him even though I haven't bothered
to confirm this yet.
As far as hype goes, Alkaline Trio's album is on par with another band's new album: Alien Ant Farm's ANThology is being pushed hard, too...different genre, same hype. Both albums fall short of amazing, yet they are both good. I'd buy them if I didn't get them for free. Anyway, here are some things about Chicago that I enjoy:
1. The Chicago Cubs (I don't like Sammy Sosa nor am I happy they traded Mark Grace).
2. Chicago Dogs (Awesome! Extra celery salt, please).
3. Ditka's (If you have to ask...).
4. The myriad of Craftsman, Prairie and Mission-style homes.
5. Sears Tower.
6. Alkaline Trio.
