Burnside

About: Burnside was a band that featured Felix, Mike (formerly of Diesel Boy), Tony (formerly of Shut Up Donny), Marius "Alex" Farioletti, and Matt (formerly of too many fucking bands to list and now a member of Tsunami Bomb). Instead of a boring bio, there's an interview (conducted by Satanic Sara Bir) below.

What a bunch of unruly bastards! Oh, well--deep in their hearts, they are probably sincere unruly bastards. True, half of Burnside's members are also section M upper management...but, hey, we can't ignore a good band forever. Plus the kids like 'em.

Personnel:
Marius Farioletti (a.k.a. Alex): Bass
Tony Teixeira: Lead guitar, backing vocals
Mike Schaus: Drums
Felix Thursday: Lead vocals, rhythm guitar

How long has Burnside been around?
"About three months," says Felix. "About a year," says Mike. "No, about three weeks," insists Felix. "How about a year and a half?" suggests Alex. "Whenever I joined the band," says Tony. Answer: Whenever Tony joined the band.

And where are you guys from?

"Felix is Westside," says Alex. "I'm, like, Central." "Yeah, I'm from the Southside, homey," says Mike, "Which would make Tony Eastside." "What do you mean Eastside?" he asks. "You live on the East Side of Santa Rosa," explains Alex. "Oh!" Tony says, "Rosetown Eastside, okay..."

So what were you guys before Burnside?

"We were in a sort of retro-metal band called Cherokee," says Felix. "Cherokeee!!! We dressed like barbarians and we wrote songs about motorcycles." Alex has a couple of "legitimate" side projects, too: "Umlaut--it's a faux German art metal band."

Real bands Burnside members have been in:
Mike was at one time in Diesel Boy. Felix was in Siren. Mike and Felix were both in Escape Goat with Jim Burden. But that might all be more bullshit. Tony is really definitely in Shut Up Donny at this very moment, though.

Felix, you promised me I would get a copy of your four-song self-titled demo if I tackled Wild Bill. Where's my CD?
"You didn't tackle him hard enough." (A lie!) "There's a secret track," Felix claims of the CD, which was recorded at Cotati's famed Prairie Sun studios. "It's a Minimalist Neoclassical piece we wrote, 'Six Minutes and Six Seconds."

Has Alex ever Karaoked so loud at Felix's house that the cops came?
Alex: "I was singing Chumbawamba."

For a band called Burnside, none of you have very big sideburns.
Mike clarifies: "The name Burnside comes from a place to skate in Portland underneath a bridge called Burnside Bridge." "Do you wanna know seriously where the name comes from?" offers Felix. "Mike's like, 'Dude, I was driving down the road one day and I saw this truck and it had flames painted on the side, and I thought Burn-side!!!" "...it had all these fuckin' Smokey and the Bandit flames going on the side," adds Mike, "and almost at that exact moment, I look over at the side of the road and I saw a street sign that said 'Burnside Road'." "I have that street sign," says Alex.

Wild Bill accuses you of being boring.
"We're not boring!" protests Alex. "I shoved a zucchini up my ass! That's gotta be somewhere."

Future Projects:
"I downloaded a Mr.T rap album mp3 on my computer," says Tony. "We need that for sampling!" cries Mike.

Closing thoughts:

"You wanna hear something ironic?" says Alex. "I'm twenty-one years old and I can't grow sideburns. And I'm in a band called Burnside! Do you see the irony in that? We're a very ironic band." "I think we're more laconic," insists Felix. [WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY: la-con-ic adj. sparing of words; terse; brief and pithy.] Um, maybe.

Lyrics:
The Ballad of Yreka

Three A.M.--I'm wasted
Ghosts of friends who've gone away
Come and go but never stay
We're hated, so we play dead
Keeping to ourselves indoors
Dying in our living rooms

No legs to stand on, so we trip repeatedly
Anonymously bleeding

Seasons pass by
Hope dies, time flies
We stand still, long on short sight
What doesn't kill us, makes us dumber
Every day we're getting number
Have a round at the Rex Club
And talk of our elusive dreams
Empty promises and glasses
Then home to pour ourselves to sleep

No legs to stand on, so we keep on staggering
Anonymously bleeding
