Never Kill the Boy on the First Date

Victory Records

2001

Okay...buy these albums as quickly as possible. I want to know who else digs this shit as much as I do. I haven't been all too keen on the Victory bands (with the exception of the New Jersey band Thursday), but I'll tell you this shit kicks MAJOR ASS!

You can call Minus metal, hardcore or whatever--I call it mind-blowing. I haven't heard any sort of heavy/fast metal I must own since I last listened to Pantera or Slayer. Their album makes me laugh because I can't help but picture Pantera and Slayer getting together, writing material, and having the Deftones record it. This is what Minus sounds like to me. But hey, I am one messed-up freak.

I think Minus is from Iceland...I just saw their names and the umlauts (not blatant misuse like Motley Crue), but it doesn't matter where they are from--I must see them ASAP. I will take The Lord of Death Himself, Sean Gibbons, with me to ensure my valid opinion of this heavy-duty metal.

Waterdown is another loud European band, and--call it what you may--this is quality rock. They aren't like their German metal counterparts the Scorpions (reader's note: I love the Scorpions) but hey, this is a new era. Waterdown's Never Kill the Boy on the First Date is awesome. How can you disike an album that has ultra-heavy de-tuned guitar, a singer and a screamer--all told Waterdown has six members! Only in Germany can that be cool. If you like heavy, fast and furious music, then you will dig this shit. If you like melodic hardcore like Grade then you will like Waterdown. Christ, if you like to rock then you need this album...it rivals Minus for the ass-kicking factor. Waterdown has a serious ass-kicker behind the drums and an equally talented bass player (these are key to kicking ass), the guitar players are proficient and complimentary to each other--no rivalry here, just solid rock!

If you're like me you probably are weary of the ass-kicking band with a shitty singer...you'll be like, "Oh yeah, this is gonna rock!--aaawww shit, that singer sucks!" If you have said this or something like "Dude, this would kick ass if the drummer was decent," then you have been burned like me. But if you like metal that is extremely heavy then check out Waterdown or Minus. I guarantee they will blow your doors off.
