The Weakerthans

Left and Leaving

Sub City Records

2000
Left and Leaving is the second effort from the Canadian band The Weakerthans. This CD is a wonderfully crafted work of art! I almost never talk about music as pure art. I prefer to think of music as a creative communication and learning tool. One way or another, this CD is enchanting.

The album is very well done, from the lyrics to the final mixdown. I like everything this disc has to offer. The lyrics written for the album could stand alone as poetry--they are a heartfelt mixture of ideas, lessons learned, introspect, and retrospect.

Singer/guitarist John K. Sampson is teh former bassist of poli-punk band Propaghandi. Sampson seems to have departed from political diatribes and, I guess, anger, to give us a look at a warmer, more human side of life.

Don't buy this album if you are looking for faster, harder, political punk rock because it doesn't exist here. Do buy this album if you want to own something that makes you happy and smile sometimes.

There are a couple of tracks that are up-tempo and even rocking, but most of it is very mellow. Overall, melody and simplicity rule on this disc. Slow tempo is where it's at on this latest Weakerthans CD. I recommend a cup of hot tea and a rainy afternoon to soak up the ambience of this music and enjoy life.
